FINAL DECISION: This book isn't really for me. The intertwined stories of three women combined with time travel/alternate realities was just too odd women's fiction. Not a bad book, but not one I would pick up again.THE STORY: Sixty year old Oliva is a newlywed with regrets. Not over her marriage, but over the years she wasted away from the man she loves. Forty year old Kathy is married to man who is in love with someone else. Elise is married to a man who seems to want to get rid of her -- in any way possible. The three end up at Summerhouse with the opportunity to change everything in their lives and make things right.
OPINION: I'm not the audience for this book because something really bothers me about the entire premise of the story. I don't like the "let's have a redo" on stories in general. It's tricky because it feels to me like a cop-out on having to accept the choices one makes. I am often willing to suspend disbelief, but this premise always bothers me.
The multiple storylines also kept me disconnected from all of them. I prefer my books more emotion and this book just felt like a gimmick based on the plot. The story wasn't bad and neither were the characters, but the resolution just didn't work for me. I think someone who was willing to look past the plot twist might enjoy this one better.
On the positive side, I like seeing the Montgomerys.
WORTH MENTIONING: I'm not sure I like the impact of this story on THE GIRL FROM SUMMER HILL.
CONNECTED BOOKS: AS YOU WISH is the third book in the Summerhouse series, but I haven't read those books. For me, the book is a sequel of sorts to THE GIRL FROM SUMMER HILL.
STAR RATING: I give this book 2 stars.

What a lovely, lovely book! I was quite enthralled with the book and couldn't put it down especially after finding there was a way to go back in time to redirect one's life path. I could identify with some of the problems these characters experienced, and often wished I could go back in time to change a huge mistake made when I was quite young and naive! I loved Olivia and Kit together as well as Alesandro and Elise!
For the most part I think it was a good book. Not as good as the lady one in this series but ok. I felt Olivia was a good character. So was Elise. However, Kathy got shafted. Her character was never fully developed. It was as if she was an after thought. Her husband was brought in first and then abruptly cut out of the story. She got maybe a 10th of the storyline with 50%going to Olivia and 40% to Elise. I just don't feel the author developed all the characters as well as she could have. I didn't care for the new madame... The niece. And Jeanne is "retiring"... We never really got a development into either of them. I really didn't like the whining niece taking the new position. Hopefully the next one is better. 3 women in awful, abusive marriages... Let's not do that one again. How about lost loves, the one that got away, or the one just plain never met?
I can't even express how excited I was when I heard that this book was coming out. I have loved this series forever and read the first two books several times. This book did not disappoint an was so very good. I hope more books follow and keep the series going.
I was really confused by the ending. It didn't grasp me from start to finish like her other books have.
I've been waiting for the new Summerhouse book for what seems like too many years. Have to say I really enjoyed it. It was not a "formula" book in which it followed the exact timeline like the other two Summerhouse books, and that's OK. This book has Olivia and Kit, who we "met" in other books. I loved that they got their happy ending! The mention of other familiar characters was nice too. In this book we had a lot more of the stories ahead of the "returning", and Kathy's story was told after the "return". All three followed the theme of bettering themselves, and not expecting the man to change. All three were strong women who knew what they wanted, and a good idea of what they needed to do. It was interesting hearing about people who had tried using the return opportunity and were too greedy. I hope Jude follows through with having Olivia start bringing women for an opportunity to change the past, and that we see more Summerhouse books. You can read this book as a standalone, but it is better having read about the Montgomery and Taggart families, and the other Summerhouse books.
I tried twice to get into this story, but I couldn't. For one thing, there was too much backstory too soon (pages and pages of which were done in dialogue). For another, the behavior of the two women was not believable or relatable. They've known each other less than a day and they take off their clothes and run through a field, climb a wall naked, drink barrels of booze...I know, it sounds kind of fun, right? Maybe, but one of them was supposedly deeply traumatized prior to this, and her persona at first was depicted as extremely guarded and self-protective. Seemed inconsistent and silly, and I couldn't work up a sense of caring about the three mains.
The intertwined stories of three women who meet on a weekend at a Virginia summerhouse and have a chance to each spend three weeks in their past really keeps you reading. We learn what their lives are like now, and as they tell each other their stories and their pasts, the deep kindness and understanding they show each other leads them to really think about what they wish had happened instead. As each gets a chance to go back to a crucial turning point, fascinating possibilities are brought to life in a second set of stories.
